Sharon and Theresa just taught another 2-week molecular marker training course at the University of Ghana, June 30 - July 11, 2008. Like last year, it was being funded by the Kirkhouse Trust and held at the Biotechnology Centre of the Univ of Ghana. See the course agenda.
PAST WORKSHOPS:
Sharon and Theresa co-organized a course with Sam Offei and Eric Danquah, previous IGD visitors, "The use of molecular markers for plant genetic resources", at the University of Ghana's Biotechnology Centre, July 2-13, 2007. See the agenda. It was sponsored by the Kirkhouse Trust. A repeat for 2008 is being planned.
Nicole
Kirschten's biology classes from Newfield High School visited again
this year, April 24 - 26, 2007. Bob Suran and Laurel Southard from the Cornell Institute for Biology Teachers have taken over the management of this annual event.
Theresa co-organized a workshop on Plant Genetic Diversity and Molecular
Marker Assisted Breeding, funded by the Generation Challenge Program. It
was held at FABI at the University of Pretoria, S. Africa, 22 May - 1 June, 2005. Sharon also came to help teach.
Theresa and Sharon co-hosted a Faculty Workshop for college teachers organized
by Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory's Dolan DNA Learning Center, Aug 1-5, 2005.
Theresa organized a workshop for members of the Plant Breeding Dept,
March 2-3, 2005, to demonstrate SSRs, SNPs and related analyses and technologies.
Due to the high number of requests, a repeat was held March 24.
In December 2004 Theresa participated in a Molecular Markers workshop in Nairobi,
Kenya. It was co-sponsored by Biosciences of East and Central Africa and
the Generation Challenge Program.Theresa taught courses including Comparative
Genomics and Proposal Writing.
On November 9, 2004, IGD and members of the sorghum community co-hosted
a workshop on sorghum genomics in St. Louis. See the agenda.
Needs assessment workshop for National Agricultural Research Systems. August 2-6, 2004. Santo Domingo de Heredia, Costa Rica. Theresa was a co-organizer, with CGIAR Generation Challenge Program and IPGRI.
June 11 Theresa and Nicole Markelz (outreach coordinator of the NSF
Plant Genome program at CU) hosted a workshop and tour for Reunion Youth
(children of Alumni here for Reunion weekend.
Last year's Expanding Your Horizons Workshop for middle-school girls
was April 24.
Last year's visit by Theresa and members of the NSF tomato genome project
to Salamanca High School on the Allegheny Reservation in Western NY was
April 26.
Nicole Kirschten's high school classes will visit the lab to learn DNA
extractions and more was April 28 & 30.
February 9-20, 2004: Theresa co-hosted a molecular markers workshop,
in Venezuela, with Carmen de Vicente of IPGRI. This was sponsored by ICGEB
and hosted by IDEA
in Caracas. More...
April 26, 2003 Expanding Your Horizons. Expanding Your Horizons
is a nationwide program to encourage middle-school girls' interest in
science. We will have 30 middle-school girls in the lab for this.
See http://www.expandingyourhorizons.org/
for more details, or the Cornell site at: http://www.angelfire.com/blues/eyh2003/home.html.
March 31/April 1, 2003. We had 44 9th-10th grade Newfield High students
come to the lab to learn DNA extractions and other lab techniques, and
discuss career opportunities in the life sciences. See photos or download
the protocol here.
October 9-12, 2002. Bamako, Mali, West Africa
In collaboration with
ICRISAT
Facilitating the improvement of pearl millet in west Africa through
conventional and molecular plant breeding, farmers' participation, and
comparative genomics strategies
This workshop was organized in the spirit of our interests in facilitating
the use of comparative genomics and other resources in the improvement
of orphan crops.
