I am interested in leguminous crops in general. Improving the resistance of Faba bean (Vicia faba) to the parasitic weed Orobanche crenata also known as broomrape is what keeps me busy at present. To achieve this goal, I am searching for markers that tag resistance genes to facilitate the selection of resistant genotypes early in a breeding program. In my opinion, the methods to be employed should be simple and must benefit from the huge amount of genetic information available today. Although faba bean lags much behind many field crops regarding the genomic information deposited in data bases, information on resistance gene analogs and putative defense response from various crops could be of great value. This work is done in collaboration with Prof. Wolfgang Link, Georg-August-University, Goettingen, Germany.
