Research Support Specialist I - DNA and Protein Microarrays Facility

A position is available in the DNA and Protein Microarrays Facility of the Cornell University Life Sciences Core Laboratories Center (CLC) in Ithaca, NY. The CLC is part of the Cornell University Institute for Biotechnology and Life Science Technologies. This position is in a state-of-the-art shared research resource laboratory dedicated to facilitating genotyping, gene expression, epigenomics, and protein expression microarray research. Responsibilities include participating in the all the general activities of the Microarrays Facility and significant interactions with investigators. The position includes performing a variety of molecular biology techniques, including PCR, nucleic acid purification, reverse transcription, production of cDNA, in vitro transcription, labeling and hybridization of fluorescent probes. The individual will be trained and will run several automated robotic platforms, including liquid-handling robots, wash stations, a Bioanalyzer, hybridization stations, a microarray printer, fluorescent scanning devices, protein arrayer, and other specialized equipment. In addition, the individual is expected play an active role in developing novel RNA and DNA-processing protocols. Flexible scheduling is desirable; occasional work on weekends may be required.

Qualifications: Bachelor degree in Biological Sciences or equivalent four years formal training program. 2-3 years experience with molecular biology techniques required, especially handling of RNA and DNA. Individual will be expected to take training courses at Cornell for chemical safety certification. Must have advanced technical knowledge and skills necessary to conduct research and to troubleshoot problems. The position requires attention to detail, excellent oral and written communication skills, organizational skills, strong attention to detail, facility with computers, the ability to work both independently and as part of a team, and dedication to doing the best job possible.

Preferred Qualifications
: M.S. degree in Biological Sciences preferred. Experience or capability in developing novel RNA-processing protocols using molecular biology techniques a plus. Computer skills are desirable for laboratory process tracking and input of data into appropriate databases. Supervisory experience desirable.
