The Cornell University Institute for Genomic Diversity African Scientists Fellowship Program

See Current and Past Winners!

The Cornell University Institute for Genomic Diversity Fellowship Program provides financial support for selected African scientists to spend up to 6 months as a visiting fellow at IGD. Recipients will work on an approved project in the field of plant genetic diversity, biodiversity conservation, molecular-marker assisted crop improvement or related. For more information about the goals and priorities of IGD, see http://www.igd.cornell.edu/.

Fellows will be appointed as a visiting fellow and as such will also have full access to the university libraries, seminars, and other opportunities at Cornell University, as well as the possibility to sit in on ongoing classes (with the permission of the instructor). A desk and bench space at the IGD will be provided. Recipients will be asked to give at least one seminar on their research at some time during their stay.

Applications are reviewed by a selection team and awarded on a competitive basis. Emphasis will be given to those deemed most relevant to the above areas of research, feasible in the time period, well-planned and organized, and suggest a high potential for impact in the related fields, in particular marker-assisted plant breeding.

The funds cover: travel, housing and subsistence allowance, laboratory supplies. Recipients may need to cover additional personal expenses (such as those of family members that accompany the recipient).

Eligibility: Recipients need to hold a minimum of a M.S. or Ph.D. or be currently enrolled in a Ph.D. program,  be a citizen of an African nation, and be proficient in English.  Recipients must be able to show that s/he holds a research position in his/her home country with adequate facilities and institutional support to deploy continuing related projects upon their return home. Upon be awarded a fellowship, recipients must apply for the appropriate visa and follow the United States and Cornell regulations for visiting scientist status (see also the Visitor Guidelines).

To apply: Please send a letter of introduction, a cv, the names and contact information of two references, and a brief statement of how this fellowship will impact your work upon returning home, enable future collaborations and further your research, as well as a brief proposal of the project to be completed during your visit. This should include a project realistically designed to be completed within a 4-6 month period, including details of how DNA and/or germplasm will be sent in advance or otherwise obtained, and how project results will be integrated into your work upon your return home.
